Is It Advisable to Get Guidance or Mentoring from Experts for UN Job Selection?

Absolutely yes.
Getting guidance or mentoring from UN job experts is not just advisable—it can be a complete game-changer. The UN recruitment process is highly competitive, procedural, and unlike most national systems.

Here’s why expert mentoring is worth considering:

1. Demystifies the Process

The UN recruitment cycle involves several complex stages—Inspira profiles, P11 forms, assessments, interviews, and roster placements. A mentor helps clarify each step so you stay focused on what matters most and avoid common pitfalls.

2. Refines Your Application Strategically

Experts can:

  • Review your CV or P11 form to match UN formats and standards
  • Tailor your motivation letter to reflect UN values and tone
  • Highlight your competencies and quantify achievements effectively

Many mentors have served on hiring panels and know exactly what gets noticed—and what gets rejected.

3. Prepares You for Assessments

Most candidates fail at the assessment stage—not due to lack of skill but unfamiliarity with:

  • Writing UN-style memos or concept notes
  • Working under time pressure
  • Understanding expected detail and structure

A mentor provides mock exercises, templates, and targeted writing drills.

4. Sharpens Your Interview Technique

UN interviews are competency-based and follow the STAR method. Mentors help by:

  • Helping you build structured STAR examples
  • Conducting realistic mock interviews
  • Coaching you on presenting confidently and authentically

5. Improves Your Chances Significantly

Mentored candidates often:

  • Avoid critical errors like incorrect formats or vague responses
  • Apply only to well-matched openings
  • Advance faster than those learning through trial and error

Some mentors also guide you on roster systems, consultancies, and internal mobility—key for long-term UN careers.
